Guff: An interview with Jeffrey Lewis

May 12, 2009

The last time the Comic Cast did acid we went insane . . . and interviewed anti-folk singer/songwriter and comic book artist Jeffrey Lewis! Lewis has several great albums under his belt  including City & Eastern Songs with his brother Jack, 12 Crass Songs - a collection of songs by the anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey, not to mention his brand new album EM ARE I.  His comic book series Fuff is currently on it’s seventh issue. We met up with Jeffrey before his gig in Dublin to talk about his comics, his thesis on Watchmen and doing live music videos on stage. Enjoy!

(Since this interview is a bit shorter than usual, we also review X-Men Origins: Wolverine and dish out some bang-up-to-date Irish comics news)

If there’s one place you can be guaranteed there won’t be any naked pictures of the Taoiseach it’s right here on the Comic Cast.  But what we can guarantee you this week is an absolutely stellar show where we  review Mark Millar’s MARVEL 1985, Rich Koslowski’s Three Fingers, Brian Michael Bendis’ Powers, Geoff Johns’ Superman: Brainiac as well as a hot from the printers review of new Irish comic Mindpuss volume 1 by Ronan Kennedy. If that wasn’t enough we also speak to Bob Byrne about his new webcomic spectacular Spazzmoid and we give our verdict on the companion film to Watchmen – Tales of the Black Freighter as well as a round-up of comics news goings on!

You know what it’s like. You’re running late for the pub and you’ve still that bloody podcast to record. So you compromise. You drink while recording. Welcome to this weeks whiskey steeped Comic Cast where we review Daredevil: Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev Omnibus, Sempé’s Nothing is Simple, Alan Moore’s Swamp thing, Tommie Kelly’s Road Crew issue 1 and Road Crew Noir. We also review the new Irish animated filmThe Secret of Kells (in cinemas March 6th) and the DVD release of Fear[s] of the Dark  – a film written and directed by several acclaimed comic book creators and graphic artists, not to mention a big fat exclusive(ish) review of “the unfilmable” Watchmen which turned out to be filmable as we seen it on a big screen made for films.  So settle down, drink up and join us in a place where everybody knows your name – the Comic Cast!

If the first Comic Cast of the New Year is anything to go by – things are looking bleak. Both of our hosts have been struck with that bug everyone from Uncle Ed to Gramps Joe seems to have at the minute. So wrap up well and have the Lemsip at hand  as this week the Comic Cast sniffles over the Watchmen internet cartoon, the DC Super Heroes Jumbo Colour and Activity Book, the Marvel Vault, the DC Vault, Jim Davis’ Garfield Gets Real DVD, Jeff Loeb and Tim Sail’s DareDevil Yellow, Astonishing  X-Men and Invincible Ironman. We also take a look back on some of the best and worst comics of 2008 and what we’re looking forward to in 2009. Achoo!

You’d never see Schulz doing this . . .

Or maybe you would. Good grief!
