On this month’s episode of the Comic Cast we’re thrilled to welcome journalist and co-presenter of the Anti Room podcast, Anna Carey to help us review The Big Feminist BUT! anthology edited by Shannon O’Leary and Joan Reilly, Studio Ghibli’s new film From Up on Poppy Hill and WONDER WOMEN! The Untold Story of American Superheroines documentary film. We’ll also be talking to Beano cartoonist Gary Northfield about how he got into the small press scene, we’ll be finding about how illustrator Anna Fitzpatrick reached the goal for her comic book on Kickstarter several times over and we’ll be speaking to writers Maura McHugh and Lynda Rucker about a new comics forum called ‘Laydeez Do Comics’ in Dublin.

On this months episode of the Comic Cast we’re joined by actor/writer Mark O’Halloran (Adam & Paul, Garage, Prosperity) to review James Joyce: Portrait of a Dubliner by Alfonso Zapico, Half Past Danger issue 1 by Stephen Mooney, Mindpuss 2 by Ronan Kennedy, Big Jim: Jim Larkin and the 1913 Lockout by Rory McConville and Paddy Lynch and Courageous Mayhem!  edited by Gar Shanley. Also on the show, we visit O’Brien Press to talk to editor Helen Carr about publishing comics in Ireland, we catch up with artist Stephen Byrne to find out how he went from The Fix Factor to the Irish Independent, Declan Shalvey tells us how he’s putting his own stamp on Marvel’s Deadpool in a forthcoming arc and we’ll be getting a tour of the French home of Galway-born illustrator Siobhán Gately.

The Comic Cast: Guaranteed Irish

It’s Alive!!!

With Halloween fast approaching it’s only fitting that on this weeks Comic Cast we review Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie! And speaking of bringing dead dogs back to life – we also review Dredd. In Irish comics we inspect At War with the Empire by Gerry Hunt, Ghost of Shandon by Alan Corbett and Tales from the Void by Darrin O’Toole and A. Kaviraj. Live from BCFE Animation Graduate Showcase at the IFI

With four of its former animation students nominated for Academy Awards earlier this year, the spotlight is firmly fixed on  Ballyfermot College of Further Education.  This week the colleges current animation graduates held their Animation Graduate Showcase 2010 in the Irish Film Institute and the Comic Cast was there to report on the event. We talk to students Nicola Hyland, Ray Johnson and Leo Crowley as well as Gareth lee, the head of the animation degree course. We also meet up with storyboard artist Stephen Byrne who graduated from the college last year to see the life of a graduate one year on. Enjoy!

Bus stop: An interview with Paddy Lynch

This week the Comic Cast was delighted to converse with Dublin cartoonist, illustrator and graphic designer Paddy Lynch. Paddy’s comics include the recently released Last Bus issue 2, In the Aquarium, Stop Gap and You Can Never Return. Paddy, along with Katie Blackwood and Philip Barrett, is also one of the minds behind Edition Book Arts –  a group which fosters interaction in and around the book arts, comic and fanzine communities in Ireland. He has illustrated covers for Le Cool magazine and his posters for music gigs are always worth stealing from shops for your bedroom. Enjoy.
